5 mistakes when developing consumer electronics in China

5 mistakes when developing consumer electronics in China

Consumer electronics projects move fast until they do not. These five mistakes show up repeatedly across overseas startup programs — and each one is avoidable with the right development partner.

1. Skipping design for manufacturing (DFM)

Beautiful renders that ignore assembly order, screw access, or antenna clearance create expensive redesigns. Run DFM reviews before tooling commitments.

2. Treating prototypes as marketing props only

Looks-like samples are not production-like samples. Validate charging, thermal behavior, drop tests, and connector cycles on engineering builds.

3. Late packaging and labeling decisions

Retail barcodes, regulatory markings, and insert languages affect BOM and line setup. Decide packaging architecture early — especially for Amazon FBA inbound.

4. No written QC plan

“Check quality before ship” is not a plan. Define functional tests, cosmetic standards, and AQL expectations before mass assembly starts.

5. Choosing factories by MOQ alone

The cheapest 1,000pc quote is expensive if 900 units sit unsold. Match factory capability to your trial size and revision cadence — often 100–500pcs for first runs.
